In magnetic therapy for spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple sclerosis (MS), and post
polio syndrome 18th century, Franz Anton Mesmer utilized bar magnets and
mesmerizing “animal magnetism” (i.e., mesmerization) to handle patients.
Ascribable to the contention surrounding this practice, France’s King Louis the
XVI organized an esteemed committee compiled of leading scientists, including
Franklin, to investigate Mesmer. This examination destroyed Mesmer’s vocation.
